How Military Time Works

The 24-hour clock counts straight from 0000 (midnight) to 2359 — no AM/PM ambiguity, which is exactly why the military, hospitals, aviation, and emergency services use it. The two rules: hours 0000-1159 map directly to AM; hours 1200-2359 are PM, with hour − 12 giving the familiar time from 1300 onward. Spoken form pads zeros: 0800 is "zero eight hundred", 1730 "seventeen thirty".

Worked Examples

Example 1 — reading a schedule. Shift "1445-2315": 1445 − 1200 = 2:45 PM; 2315 − 1200 = 11:15 PM. Duration 8.5 hours.

Example 2 — the midnight traps. 0000 = midnight (start of day), 1200 = noon, and 2400 is only used to mark end-of-day — payroll systems want 0000 of the next day. "12 AM/12 PM" confusion is precisely what the 24-hour clock eliminates.

Example 3 — timesheet math. Clock 0645-1915 with a 45-minute break: 19:15 − 6:45 = 12:30 elapsed − 0:45 = 11.75 hours — 24-hour subtraction needs no AM/PM bookkeeping, which is why time clocks store it internally.

Military Time on Timesheets and Payroll

Time systems in healthcare, logistics, and manufacturing display 24-hour punches; payroll then converts to decimal hours for pay. The pipeline: 24-hour punches → elapsed time (subtract, minding midnight crossings: add 24 to the out-time when it's smaller) → minus unpaid breaks → decimal conversion (minutes ÷ 60). Military vs 24-Hour Clock: The Pedantic Corner

• Formatting: strict military style omits the colon (1730) and pads to four digits (0800); civilian 24-hour usage keeps the colon (17:30) — ISO 8601 standardises the latter for data.
• Time zones: military operations suffix a zone letter — 1500Z is UTC ("Zulu"), local time gets its zone's letter. Aviation and forecasting live in Zulu time.
• Leading-zero speech: "zero six thirty," never "six thirty," in radio use — ambiguity kills.
• 2400 vs 0000: both mean midnight; 2400 closes a day (schedules, contracts), 0000 opens one (logs, payroll). Systems accept 0000 almost exclusively.

Learning the Conversion Cold

Three tricks that make it automatic: afternoon numbers end in the familiar hour minus 2 is a myth to avoid — the real anchor is 1200; instead memorise the pairs 1300/1, 1500/3, 1700/5, 1900/7, 2100/9, 2300/11 (odd PM hours), and the evens fill themselves in. Subtracting 12 mentally is fastest as "drop 10, drop 2": 1830 → 830 → 6:30 PM. And for going upward, PM + 12 with the noon exception (12 PM stays 1200).
