Calculate MPF contributions — Hong Kong’s Mandatory Provident Fund: 5% employee + 5% employer on relevant income between HK$7,100 and HK$30,000/month (max $1,500 each), with the famous first-60-day and low-income exemptions.
Quick answer: MPF: 5% + 5% of relevant income, employee capped at HK$1,500/month (income ceiling $30,000); employees earning under $7,100 contribute nothing (employer still pays 5%). New hires: employee contributions start after the first 30 days + the contribution-holiday mechanics.
The Bands
| Monthly income | Employee | Employer |
|---|---|---|
| Under $7,100 | $0 | 5% of income |
| $7,100 - $30,000 | 5% | 5% |
| Above $30,000 | $1,500 cap | $1,500 cap |
Relevant income: wages, commissions, bonuses, gratuities — excluding severance/long-service payments and housing allowances in kind. Self-employed: 5% of relevant income within the same bands.
Worked Examples
Example 1. $25,000: $1,250 each side — $2,500/month into your chosen scheme’s funds.
Example 2 — high earner. $80,000: capped $1,500 + $1,500 = $3,000 — just 3.75% of income; HK’s system leans on voluntary top-ups (TVC: tax-deductible to $60,000/year combined with annuity premiums).
Example 3 — new joiner. First 30 days employee-exempt; contributions begin after, with the first payment covering from day 31 — payroll gets this wrong constantly.
The Big Issues
Fund fees (the FER debate), the severance offset abolition (May 2025) — employers can no longer offset new severance/LSP against their MPF contributions — and eMPF’s centralization reshaping the admin. Withdrawal: 65 (or early grounds: permanent departure, incapacity, $5,000-balance small claims).
Optimization
Tax-deductible voluntary contributions (TVC) ride the salaries-tax deduction to $60,000/year; fund-choice drag matters more — HK’s default investment strategy (DIS) capped fees at 0.75%, a sane default. The Singapore CPF contrast: CPF’s 37% combined dwarfs MPF’s 10% — HK retirement depends far more on private savings.
