Calculate SOCSO and EIS contributions — PERKESO’s injury + invalidity schemes (employee ~0.5%, employer ~1.75%) and the Employment Insurance System (0.2% each), on wages capped at RM6,000/month.
Quick answer: SOCSO on wages up to RM6,000/month: employer ~1.75% + employee ~0.5% (both schemes); EIS adds 0.2% each. RM4,000 salary → roughly employee RM19.75 + employer RM69.05 + EIS RM8 each — small money, big coverage (injury pensions, invalidity, job-loss benefits).
The Schemes
| Scheme | Employee | Employer | Covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Employment Injury | — | 1.25% | Work accidents (incl. commuting), occupational disease — medical, temporary/permanent disablement, dependants’ pensions |
| Invalidity | 0.5% | 0.5% | Non-work invalidity/death before 60 — pensions |
| EIS | 0.2% | 0.2% | Job-loss: 3-6 months of reducing benefits (80%→30%) + re-employment services |
All on wages capped at RM6,000/month (ceiling raised Oct 2024 from RM5,000), via PERKESO’s banded contribution table. Coverage is mandatory for Malaysian employees and (injury scheme) foreign workers.
Worked Example
RM4,000: first-category total ≈ RM88.80 + EIS RM16 combined/month — for which a workplace accident pays medical + up to 90% wage-replacement disablement benefits, and retrenchment triggers EIS’s stepped job-search allowance. The cheapest meaningful insurance in Malaysian payroll.
EIS In Detail (The One People Claim)
Retrenched? Apply within 60 days: benefits run 80/50/40/40/30/30% of assumed wages over 3-6 months (contribution-history dependent), plus training fees and allowances. Resignations don’t qualify (constructive dismissal does — document it).
Claims Notes
Commuting accidents count as employment injuries (the to-and-from-work rule) — report within 48 hours; invalidity pensions need 24 months of qualifying contributions. Beyond RM6,000 wages, contributions (and thus benefit bases) freeze at the ceiling — higher earners should layer private income protection. Pair with EPF and PCB for the full deduction stack.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does SOCSO cover?
Employment injury (work + commuting accidents, occupational disease) and invalidity (non-work disability/death before 60) — medical care, wage-replacement benefits, and pensions.
What is the SOCSO wage ceiling?
RM6,000/month since October 2024 — wages above it contribute (and insure) only up to the ceiling.
What is EIS?
The Employment Insurance System: 0.2% each side, paying retrenched workers 3-6 months of stepped benefits (80% down to 30%) plus re-employment help — claim within 60 days.
Do foreign workers contribute?
Injury-scheme coverage is mandatory for foreign workers; invalidity and EIS apply to Malaysians/PRs.
Does resignation qualify for EIS?
No — EIS needs loss of employment (retrenchment, closure, constructive dismissal); voluntary exits don’t claim.
