Calculate Sunday pay in South Africa — the BCEA’s 2x rate when Sunday isn’t your ordinary workday (1.5x when it is), plus the full-day minimum rule for short Sunday shifts.

Quick answer: BCEA Sunday rules: 2x your rate if you don’t ordinarily work Sundays; 1.5x if you do — and if the 2x computation yields less than a full ordinary day’s pay, you get the full day anyway (the minimum rule).

The Section 16 Rules

Occasional Sunday workerDouble (2x) the wage for hours worked
Ordinary Sunday worker (shifts rostered Sundays)1.5x
Minimum paymentIf the premium computation is LESS than a full ordinary day’s wage, pay the full day
Time off alternativePaid shift off by agreement in lieu of the premium
Above earnings thresholdProtections don’t auto-apply — contract governs

Worked Examples

Example 1 — short occasional Sunday. R80/hr, 3 hours, 9-hour ordinary day: 2x = R480, but the full-day minimum (9 × 80 = R720) is more → R720 owed. Short Sunday call-ins are expensive by design.

Example 2 — full occasional Sunday. 9 hours × R160 = R1,440 — double a normal day.

Example 3 — rostered Sunday staff. Retail worker ordinarily on Sundays, 8 hours: 8 × R120 = R960 (1.5x); sectoral determinations (retail/hospitality) sometimes modify — check yours.

Stacking Notes

Sunday + overtime: hours beyond 45 on a week containing Sunday work apply the GREATER premium per hour, not both stacked (BCEA anti-pyramiding). Sunday + public holiday coinciding: the public-holiday rules take over. Payslips must show the Sunday hours separately — a record-keeping right that wins disputes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Sunday pay in South Africa?

Double pay for employees who don’t ordinarily work Sundays; 1.5x for those who do — with a full ordinary day’s wage as the minimum when the premium yields less.

What is the Sunday minimum-payment rule?

If 2x (or 1.5x) × the hours comes to less than a full ordinary day’s pay, the employer pays the full day — short Sunday shifts round up.

Can time off replace Sunday pay?

Yes by agreement — a paid shift off in lieu within the BCEA timeframe.

Do Sunday and overtime premiums stack?

No — the greater premium applies per hour (anti-pyramiding); they don’t multiply together.

Who loses automatic Sunday protection?

Employees above the BCEA earnings threshold and genuinely senior managers — their contracts must provide it instead.
