Calculate Singapore overtime — Employment Act Part IV: 1.5 × the hourly basic rate beyond 44 hours/week, for workmen earning ≤ $4,500 and non-workmen ≤ $2,600/month, capped at 72 OT hours monthly.
Quick answer: SG OT = 1.5 × hourly basic rate (monthly basic × 12 ÷ 52 ÷ 44) past 44 hrs/week. Coverage: non-workmen ≤ $2,600/month basic; workmen ≤ $4,500 — above those, OT is contractual. Non-workman OT pay itself calculates on a salary capped at $2,600. Max 72 OT hours/month.
The Formula
Hourly basic rate = (12 × monthly basic) ÷ (52 × 44); OT pays 1.5× that per hour past 44/week. The quirks that decide real paychecks:
| Coverage caps | Non-workmen (white-collar): basic ≤ $2,600; workmen (manual): ≤ $4,500 — above them, Part IV doesn’t apply and the contract governs |
| The $2,600 computation cap | A covered non-workman’s OT RATE computes on at most $2,600 even if actual basic is higher via allowance structures |
| Limits | 72 OT hours/month max; 12 hours/day ceiling (exemptions via MOM) |
| Payment deadline | Within 14 days after the salary period |
Worked Example
$2,400 basic non-workman, 20 OT hours: hourly = 28,800 ÷ 2,288 = $12.59 → OT $18.88 × 20 = $377.62. A $3,000 non-workman: not covered — whatever the contract says (and many contracts in that band say nothing: negotiate it).
PMEs and the Gap
Professionals/managers/executives sit outside Part IV regardless of salary — Singapore’s white-collar OT is contractual culture, not law; the covered zone protects lower-wage operations staff. Rest days (1/week) and public-holiday pay run separately with their own premium math.
Claims
Unpaid OT → TADM mediation then the Employment Claims Tribunals (caps apply; 1-year limitation) — itemized payslips (mandatory since 2016) carry the evidence. Related: incomplete-month proration and the CPF treatment (OT is CPF-able ordinary wages).
Frequently Asked Questions
Who gets statutory overtime in Singapore?
Employment Act Part IV: workmen earning ≤ $4,500/month basic and non-workmen ≤ $2,600 — 1.5x past 44 hours/week; everyone above relies on contract terms.
How is the OT rate computed?
Hourly basic = (12 × monthly basic) ÷ (52 × 44); OT = 1.5× — with non-workmen’s computation capped at a $2,600 salary basis.
What is the overtime limit?
72 hours per month (and 12 hours/day) — beyond needs MOM exemption; the cap is enforced in audits.
When must OT be paid?
Within 14 days after the end of the salary period — late payment is itself an offence.
Do PMEs get overtime?
Not statutorily — professionals, managers and executives sit outside Part IV at any salary; OT for them is purely contractual.
