Working Days in a Month Calculator

Updated August 2026 · Free · No sign-up

Count the working days in any month — weekends out, 2026 holidays auto-subtracted — plus the working days left in this month from today. The number payroll, billing, and monthly targets all depend on.

Quick answer: A month contains 20-23 working days: weekdays minus public holidays. The yearly average is 21. February is usually shortest (19-20); months whose 1st falls on a Monday pack the most weekdays.

How Many Working Days in a Month?

Working Days = Weekdays in the Month − Public Holidays on Weekdays

The range is mechanical: a 31-day month has 21-23 weekdays depending on which weekday the 1st lands on; 30-day months have 20-22; February has 20 (21 in some leap-year layouts). Holidays then trim 0-2 more. That swing — 19 vs 23 — is a 20% difference in available time, which is why monthly targets and per-day pay rates should never assume "about 22".

Worked Examples

Example 1 — salary proration. Joining August 18, 2026 (21 working days in August, working 10 of them): monthly salary × 10/21 — the working-day inputs for the prorated salary calculator come from exactly this count.

Example 2 — monthly billing. A consultant at $800/day billing a full November 2026 (19 US working days): $15,200 — not the $17,600 a "22-day month" assumption promises. Short months are real money.

Example 3 — mid-month target check. "Working days left" mode on July 20, 2026 shows 8 remaining working days — a monthly quota at 60% needs 5%/day to close, visible instantly.

Payroll Uses: The Denominator Question

Per-day salary for joiners, leavers, and unpaid days divides by one of three denominators: this month's actual working days (varies 19-23 — most precise), fixed 26 (working-day convention), or fixed 30 (calendar convention, standard in India/Gulf). The same absence costs noticeably different amounts under each — a ₹60,000 salary's day rate is ₹3,158 (÷19) vs ₹2,000 (÷30). Know your employer's method before checking the math; all three run in the prorated salary calculator.

Monthly Planning Rhythm

  • Targets: set monthly quotas per working day, not per month — a 19-day November and a 23-day July differ by 21% in selling time.
  • Standups/1:1s cadence: a "weekly" meeting runs 4-5 times depending on the month — calendar-driven rituals quietly consume more of short months.
  • Month-end crunch: finance close and invoicing land harder when the last week contains a holiday — December 2026 (Christmas Fri) is the classic squeeze.
  • The 6-day week version: add the month's Saturdays (4-5) to the weekday count; alternate-Saturday offices add 2.

Whole-year totals and "days left this year" live in the working days in a year calculator; the span between two specific dates in the between-dates calculator; countdowns to a deadline in the business days until calculator; and payday schedules — which working-day counts feed directly — in the pay period calculator.
