Business Days Explained
"Within 5 business days" — everyone says it, and half the disputes in shipping, banking, and contracts come from counting it differently. Here is exactly what a business day is, how to count them, and the rollover rules when deadlines hit weekends.
What Counts as a Business Day
A business day is any weekday that is not a public holiday in the relevant jurisdiction — Monday to Friday, minus federal/bank holidays. Three consequences people miss: the relevant holiday calendar depends on whose business days the contract means (a US–UK agreement has different sets on each side); Saturday is a business day nowhere in standard usage even where shops open; and "working days" and "business days" mean the same thing in almost all drafting.
Counting Rules
- Start counting the day after the trigger: "5 business days from Monday" runs Tuesday–Monday, not Monday–Friday.
- Delivery promises usually include the final day: shipped Thursday "within 5 business days" arrives by the following Thursday.
- Deadlines landing on weekends/holidays roll forward to the next business day in most statutes and contracts (payroll rolls backward — payday moves earlier).
Count any span instantly: the working days between dates calculator (with built-in US/UK/India holiday calendars), the business days until calculator for countdowns, and the deadline calculator for adding N business days to a date.

Where Business-Day Counting Decides Real Money
- Banking: ACH transfers "1–2 business days" — a Friday-evening transfer lands Tuesday-Wednesday, not the weekend.
- Legal/tax deadlines: response windows in business days with strict rollover rules — always verify which holiday calendar the statute uses.
- Payroll: cutoffs and paydays run on business days; holiday collisions pay early. Map yours with the pay period calculator.
- Notice periods are the exception: they run in CALENDAR days — mixing the two conventions is the classic resignation-date mistake.

UK bank holidays and India's national holidays differ — all three calendars are built into our date tools above.
