Calculate Mondayisation — New Zealand’s rule moving weekend public holidays to the following Monday (or Tuesday) for employees who don’t normally work weekends, and the pay outcomes for each pattern.
Quick answer: The rule: when a Mondayisable holiday (Waitangi, ANZAC, Christmas, Boxing Day, New Year’s pair) falls on a weekend, weekend workers observe it on the actual day; non-weekend workers observe it the following Monday/Tuesday — one holiday each, never two.
How Mondayisation Works
Eleven NZ public holidays include five "Mondayisable" dates (Christmas/Boxing Day, New Year’s Day/Day After, Waitangi, ANZAC). When one lands on a weekend:
| Your pattern | Your holiday is... |
|---|---|
| Mon-Fri worker | The following Monday (Tuesday for the second of a pair) |
| Weekend worker (that day) | The actual Saturday/Sunday |
| Works both | Still only ONE observance — the actual day |
Worked Examples
Example 1 — Boxing Day Saturday. Office worker: Monday the 28th is the paid holiday (and Christmas-Sunday Mondayises to Tuesday — the famous 4-day week). Retail worker rostered Saturdays: the 26th itself is the holiday — working it pays 1.5x + an alternative day.
Example 2 — the "not otherwise working" trap. A part-timer who works neither the actual day nor the Mondayised day gets... nothing — holidays only pay when they fall on an OTHERWISE WORKING DAY, the Act’s central concept.
Example 3 — ANZAC Sunday. Cafe staff rostered Sundays observe the 25th (1.5x + alt day if working); Mon-Fri staff get Monday the 26th.
The Payouts
Observed holiday, not working: relevant daily pay (what you’d have earned). Working it: time-and-a-half for hours worked + an alternative holiday (a full day in lieu, regardless of hours worked) — the alternative day is the piece employers forget on Mondayised dates. See the full public-holiday page for the otherwise-working-day tests.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Mondayisation?
NZ’s rule transferring weekend-falling public holidays (Waitangi, ANZAC, Christmas pair, New Year pair) to the following Monday/Tuesday for staff who don’t normally work weekends.
Do weekend workers get the Monday too?
No — one observance each: weekend workers take the actual day; Mon-Fri workers take the Mondayised day.
What if I work my observed holiday?
Time-and-a-half for the hours PLUS a full alternative holiday — the alt day accrues regardless of shift length.
What if the holiday isn’t my working day at all?
No entitlement — public holidays only pay when they fall (actual or Mondayised) on an otherwise working day for you.
Which holidays Mondayise?
Christmas, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day and the Day After, Waitangi Day, and ANZAC Day — Easter and regional days have their own fixed-weekday logic.
